The Paradox of the Clear Proof (98:1-4)
“Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not going to abandon [their religion] until there came to them clear evidence — a Messenger from Allah, reciting purified pages… And those who were given the Scripture did not become divided until after there came to them clear evidence.”
The tension: one expects that the arrival of clear proof would produce clarity and unity. The Quran observes the opposite: the clearest prophetic proof (Muhammad) produced the most severe division among those who had previous scripture. The “until” (hatta) construction implies that their division was conditional on receiving the proof — before the proof, they maintained a kind of uncertain unity; after the proof, the evidence forced a decision.
The Essence of Religion (98:5)
“Wa-ma umiru illa li-ya’budu llaha mukhlisina lahu al-dina hunafa’a wa-yuqimu al-salata wa-yu’tu al-zakata wa-dhalika dinu al-qayyima.”
Three requirements:
- Pure monotheistic worship (mukhlisina lahu al-din) — sincerely devoted to Allah alone
- Hunafa’ (upright/turning away from falsehood) — in the tradition of Ibrahim’s hanifiyya, turning away from all idolatry
- Prayer and Zakat — the two pillars that express worship vertically (prayer) and horizontally (care for the community)
“And that is the correct religion” (dinu al-qayyima) — this verse has been described by Ibn Rajab as the most comprehensive verse about the purpose of the entire prophetic tradition.
The Best and Worst of Created Beings (98:6-8)
“Indeed, those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures [sharr al-bariyya]. Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds — those are the best of creatures [khayr al-bariyya].”
Al-bariyya (created beings/creatures) encompasses all creation — the verse places faithful believers above angels. This is consistent with the Quranic doctrine that when Adam was taught the Names (2:31-33) and the angels were commanded to prostrate, the human with divine knowledge exceeded the angels in standing.
