al-Ism al-Azam — The Greatest Name of Allah

الاِسمُ الأَعظَمُ — الاِسمُ الأَعظَمُ للهِ وَسِرُّهُ

Al-Ism al-Azam (الاِسم الأَعظَم — the greatest name, the supreme name) refers to the belief — found across Islamic scholarly, Sufi, and esoteric traditions — that among Allah's ninety-nine names there is one supreme name whose invocation carries extraordinary power, a name so comprehensive that it encompasses the totality of the divine reality. The hadith tradition: *'Allah has ninety-nine names — whoever memorizes (*ahsaha*) them will enter Paradise.'* (Bukhari/Muslim) The scholars debated which of the known names is the greatest — *Allah* itself, *al-Rahman*, *al-Hayy al-Qayyum* (the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining), or *al-Ahad* (the One). But there is also a tradition that the Ism al-Azam is hidden — known only to specific prophets, awliya', and, in the Ismaili understanding, to the Imam who possesses all divine secrets. In Ismaili ta'wil, the Ism al-Azam is the batin of all names — the reality behind the names that the Imam alone fully knows and transmits through the da'wa.

The Ninety-Nine Names and the Greatest Name

The tradition of the names: “Allah has ninety-nine names — one hundred minus one. He is Witr (odd/unique) and loves the odd number. Whoever memorizes (ahsaha) them enters Paradise.” (Bukhari) — The hadith’s list of ninety-nine names became the standard reference for Islamic devotion; the names are the content of classical tasbeeh and the basis for the Divine Names tradition.

Candidates for the greatest name: Scholars proposed various candidates:

The dominant scholarly opinion: the Ism al-Azam is most likely Allah al-Hayy al-Qayyum or is dispersed across specific verses of the Quran.

The Hidden Name in Sufi and Esoteric Traditions

The name as esoteric knowledge: In Sufi and esoteric traditions, the Ism al-Azam is not merely an article of theoretical knowledge but a living secret transmitted through initiation — the shaykh transmits to the advanced student the name that, when invoked with complete presence and sincerity, brings the soul into direct divine encounter.

The name and miraculous power: The prophetic narrative about Asiya (or ‘Isa) invoking the Ism al-Azam, or Bilqis’s throne being transported instantly, are understood as demonstrations of the name’s power when invoked correctly. The name, in this understanding, is not a magical formula but an alignment of the invocant’s reality with the divine reality — the name is effective only when the invoker has achieved the spiritual station that the name describes.

Ismaili Ta’wil — The Imam Possesses the Ism al-Azam

The Imam’s knowledge: In the Ismaili tradition, the Ism al-Azam is among the secret knowledges (‘ilm al-batin) that the Imam holds — transmitted from Prophet to Wasi to Imam in an unbroken chain. The Prophet transmitted to ‘Ali not only the exoteric knowledge of the Quran but the deepest esoteric secrets, including the knowledge that the names conceal.

The name as the walayah’s inner reality: In Ismaili ta’wil, the Ism al-Azam is not a specific Arabic word but the inner reality of walayah itself — the recognition of the Imam is the recognition of the divine’s highest accessible name. When the mumin affirms walayah with complete sincerity, they are invoking the Ism al-Azam in its truest sense.
