The Verse of Perfection (5:3)
“Al-yawma akmaltu lakum dinakum wa-atmamtu ‘alaykum ni’mati wa-raditu lakum al-Islama dinan.”
Revealed on the day of Arafat during the Farewell Pilgrimage — the Prophet died approximately 81 days later. The verse declares the completion (ikmal) of the religion and the completion (itmam) of divine favor. The Shi’i/Ismaili tradition reads this verse in direct conjunction with what is reported to have been announced at Ghadir Khumm (on the return from the Farewell Pilgrimage): the Prophet’s designation of Ali — “For whomever I am the guardian (mawla), Ali is his guardian” — as the completion of the religion. The Sunni tradition reads the verse as a declaration that no new obligation would be added after this point.
The Prohibition Categories (5:3)
5:3 contains the most comprehensive prohibition list in the Quran — foods specifically forbidden: carrion, blood, pork, what has been dedicated to other than Allah, what was killed by strangling/blow/headlong fall/attack by a predator (unless you slaughter it), and what was sacrificed at altars. Then the declaration of completion.
The People of the Book Dialogue (5:41-82)
Al-Ma’ida contains extensive engagement with Jewish and Christian communities:
- The charge that some Jewish scholars altered their scripture (yuharrifuna al-kalim)
- The statement that the Torah and Gospel were sent down by Allah and contain huda wa-nur (guidance and light) (5:44, 5:46)
- The most positive statement about Christians: “You will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say ‘We are Christians.’” (5:82) — because of the priests and monks who are not arrogant
The Ma’ida Narrative (5:112-115)
The disciples of Jesus asked: “Can your Lord send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven?” Jesus said: “Fear Allah, if you should be believers.” They said: “We wish to eat from it and let our hearts be reassured and know that you have been truthful to us.” Jesus prayed; the table was sent. The last verse warns: if any disbelieves after this, Allah will punish them with a punishment the like of which He has not punished anyone among the worlds.
