al-Sabiqun — The Foremost in Faith and Ismaili Ta'wil

السَّابِقُونَ — الفَائِزُونَ بِسَبقِ الإِيمَانِ وَوَلَايَةِ الإِمَام

Al-Sabiqun (السَّابِقُون — the foremost ones, those who preceded) is a Quranic category of believers described in Surah al-Waqi'a (56:10-11): *'And the foremost — the foremost, those are the ones brought near.'* The sabiqun occupy the highest rank in the tripartite division of humanity: the sabiqun (foremost), the ashab al-yamin (people of the right), and the ashab al-shimal (people of the left). In Ismaili ta'wil, the sabiqun are those who attained walayah — recognized the Imam — in the most complete and earliest way. Their priority (*sabiqa*) in faith corresponds to their proximity to the Imam's reality.

The Quranic Sabiqun

Surah al-Waqi’a (the Inevitable, 56): One of the most theologically concentrated surahs on the afterlife, Surah al-Waqi’a divides humanity at the moment of the Hour into three groups:

  1. al-Sabiqun (56:10-11): “And the foremost — the foremost, those are the ones brought near, in the gardens of bliss. A multitude of the former peoples and a few of the later peoples.” The repetition (al-sabiquna al-sabiqun) emphasizes their preeminent rank. They are al-muqarrabun — the brought-near ones — dwelling in gardens of delight.

  2. Ashab al-Yamin (people of the right, 56:27-38): A large group in Paradise, promised specific pleasures but described separately from the sabiqun.

  3. Ashab al-Shimal (people of the left, 56:41-56): Those in Hell.

The prophetic companions as sabiqun: The classical tafsir tradition identifies the sabiqun with the earliest Companions of the Prophet — those who accepted Islam before the Hijra, before Badr, before Hudaybiyya. Priority in Islam (sabiqa) carries spiritual weight.

Ismaili Ta’wil of al-Sabiqun

Sabiqa as walayah: In Ismaili ta’wil, the sabiqa (priority, preeminence) of the sabiqun is their walayah — the degree to which they have recognized and accepted the Imam’s authority. The soul that has embraced walayah fully, in the most complete and integrated way, is the sabiq (foremost) among believers.

The Ismaili hierarchy of sabiqun:

“A multitude from the former peoples, a few from the later”: The Ismaili tradition reads this as a commentary on the history of the da’wa — in the great prophetic cycles of the past, vast numbers attained the degree of walayah; in the later cycles (including the current era), the truly foremost are few, because the full esoteric knowledge of walayah is accessible only through initiation.
