The Four Oaths: A Geography of Revelation
Allah swears by:
- Al-Teen (the fig tree): associated by many commentators with the site near Damascus where Jesus walked, or with the geography of prophetic transmission generally
- Al-Zaytoun (the olive): associated with Jerusalem and the olive groves of Palestine, where Jesus was active
- Tur Sinin (Mount Sinai): where Allah spoke to Moses
- Al-Balad al-Amin (the secure city — Mecca): where Muhammad received revelation
The four form a prophetic geography: Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad, and the land of each prophet’s revelation. The oath is by the entire terrain of the Abrahamic prophetic tradition.
Ahsani Taqwim: The Best of Forms (95:4)
“We have certainly created man in the best of stature (ahsani taqwim).”
Ahsani taqwim: the finest form, the most balanced structure, the best proportioning. This is not only physical but speaks to the human being’s full form — reason, will, moral capacity, language, the ability to know and love. The human being is the pinnacle of creation in terms of the form in which existence has been arranged.
The Fall and the Exception (95:5-6)
“Then We returned him to the lowest of the low — except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they will have a reward uninterrupted.”
The downward journey: from the finest form to the lowest of the low (asfala safilin). The same creature capable of the highest attainment is capable of the deepest degradation — not by external force but by their own choices.
The exception: belief + righteous action = not merely avoiding the fall, but receiving reward without end (ghayr mamnun: un-ending, un-interrupted, not cut off).
