The Prophets’ Family Lines in the Quran
Ibrahim’s legacy through both sons:
- Isma’il: the forefather of the Arabs, built the Ka’ba with Ibrahim (2:127), the ancestor of the Prophet Muhammad
- Ishaq (Isaac): his son Ya’qub/Israel, whose twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Banu Isra’il
- Both sons are named in Ibrahim’s du’a: “Praise be to Allah Who has given me, in old age, Isma’il and Ishaq. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.” (14:39)
Dawud and Sulayman: “And Solomon inherited David…” (27:16) — literally and theologically. Sulayman received the kingdom, the wisdom, and the miracles.
Maryam and ‘Isa: Jesus had no biological children — his spiritual inheritance was through his disciples (hawariyyun).
The Prophet’s Children
Muhammad’s children by Khadijah:
- Sons who died in infancy: al-Qasim (whose name the Prophet took — Abu al-Qasim), ‘Abdullah (al-Tayyib wa al-Tahir)
- Daughters: Zaynab, Ruqayya, Umm Kulthum, Fatima al-Zahra
After Khadijah’s death, a son by Maria al-Qibtiyya:
- Ibrahim: died at approximately 16-18 months (10 AH/631 CE); a solar eclipse occurred on the day of his death
The death of all male children was the occasion for Surah al-Kawthar (108) — revealed when the Qurayshi ‘As ibn Wa’il mocked the Prophet as al-abtar (cut off, without male heirs). Allah’s response: it is those who hate you who are cut off.
Fatima al-Zahra — The Continuation
Fatima is called Sayyidat Nisa’ Ahl al-Janna (the Mistress of the Women of Paradise). Through her marriage to Ali, she bore:
- Hasan ibn Ali — the 2nd Imam
- Husayn ibn Ali — the 3rd Imam (Karbala)
- Zaynab bint Ali — whose role after Karbala preserved the message
- Umm Kulthum bint Ali
The Prophet said: “Fatima is a part of me — whoever angers her has angered me.” (Bukhari)
