Ilm al-Huruf (عِلمُ الحُرُوف — the Science of Letters) is the Islamic esoteric discipline that treats the Arabic letters as the fundamental building blocks of existence — the 28 letters corresponding to the 28 lunar mansions, the 28 stations of the heart, the signs of the zodiac, and the numerical values of the cosmos. At its simplest it is the *abjad* system (أَبجَد — the traditional order assigning numerical values to each letter: alif=1, ba'=2, jim=3...). At its most sophisticated it is the Sufi/Ismaili science of the batin (inner meaning) of Quranic letters, particularly the *huruf al-muqatta'at* — the mysterious combinations like Alif-Lam-Mim (ا ل م) that open 29 Quranic surahs and for which the Prophet said: 'I do not know their meaning — it is between me and my Lord.'

The Abjad System

The foundation of ilm al-huruf is the abjad ordering of the Arabic alphabet, different from the familiar alif-ba’ order used in dictionaries. The abjad order (alif, ba’, jim, dal, ha’, waw, zayn, ha’, ta’, ya’, kaf, lam, mim, nun, sin, ‘ayn, fa’, sad, qaf, ra’, shin, ta’, tha’, kha’, dhal, dad, zay, ghayn) assigns numerical values to each letter from 1 to 1000.

This system underlies:

The Huruf al-Muqatta’at: The Disconnected Letters

Twenty-nine surahs of the Quran open with combinations of Arabic letters that stand alone — not forming words: Alif-Lam-Mim (الم), Ya-Sin (يس), Ta-Ha (طه), Ha-Mim (حم), Kaf-Ha-Ya-‘Ayn-Sad (كهيعص), and others.

Classical scholars gave multiple interpretations:

In Sufi and Ismaili interpretation, these letters are the Keys of the Unseen (mafatih al-ghayb) — the seed-syllables from which the manifest universe unfolds. Ibn Arabi in Fusus al-Hikam treats each letter as a divine Name manifest in a specific prophet; every prophet “carries” a letter.

The Ismaili Cosmic Alphabet

In Ismaili ta’wil, the Arabic letters are not arbitrary signs — they are the subtle bodies of cosmic realities. The 28 letters correspond to:

The letter alif corresponds to the First Intellect (al-‘Aql al-Awwal); ba’ to the Universal Soul (al-Nafs al-Kulliyya); subsequent letters descend through the hudud (limiting principles) of the hierarchy. To know the inner science of letters is to know the structure of the da’wa itself.
