A complete guide to the Bohra post-namaz routine — Tasbeeh-e-Fatema, Ayat al-Kursi, adhkar, and the spiritual purposes behind each practice.

Why a Post-Namaz Routine?

The moment immediately after salah is among the most blessed times in a Muslim’s day. The Prophet (SAW) said: “Ask Allah in the time after salah — your supplication is answered.” The post-namaz moment is not a pause before life resumes — it is the culmination of the prayer, a brief sanctuary before returning to the world.

A consistent post-namaz routine transforms salah from an isolated act into the backbone of a spiritually structured day.

The Complete Routine

Step 1 — Tasbeeh-e-Fatema (AS)

After every faraidh (obligatory) namaz, recite the Tasbeeh given to Syedatona Fatema az-Zahra (AS) by the Prophet:

DhikrCountArabic
Allahu Akbar33 ×اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Then once:

“There is no god but Allah, alone without partner. To Him belongs sovereignty and praise. He gives life and death, and He is ever-living, never dying. In His hand is all good, and He is over all things powerful.”

Why? When Syedatona Fatema (AS) complained to the Prophet of hand blisters from grinding grain, he taught her this tasbih instead of giving her a servant, saying: “This is better for you than a servant and better than this world and all that is in it.” (Muslim)

Step 2 — Ayat al-Kursi

After the Tasbeeh, recite Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) once:

Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Why? The Prophet said: “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer — nothing will prevent him from entering Paradise except death.” (an-Nasa’i, Ibn Hibban — authentic)

Step 3 — The Three Quls (Suras of Protection)

After Fajr and Maghrib especially (though good after any namaz), recite three times each:

Why? The Prophet recited these three suras after every Fajr and Maghrib, three times each, for protection throughout the day and night. He also recited them when he was ill, blowing into his hands and wiping himself.

Step 4 — Istighfar

Say at least three times:

Astaghfirullāhal-ʿaẓīmal-ladhī lā ilāha illā huwal-ḥayyul-qayyūm wa atūbu ilayh

“I seek forgiveness from Allah the Magnificent — there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining — and I turn to Him in repentance.”

Step 5 — Dua for Specific Needs

After completing the above, you may make personal dua in any language. The Prophet encouraged asking for:

The Abbreviated Minimum

If you are short on time, the bare minimum that retains full sunnah benefit:

  1. Tasbeeh-e-Fatema (33 + 33 + 33 + once)
  2. Ayat al-Kursi (once)
  3. Istighfar × 3

This takes under 2 minutes and carries an immeasurable reward.

Morning (Fajr) and Evening (Maghrib) Special Adhkar

After Fajr and Maghrib, additional adhkar are especially recommended:

Morning (Fajr)

DhikrCount

Evening (Maghrib)

DhikrCount

The Bohra Tradition

In the Dawoodi Bohra tradition, additional practices after namaz include:

The key principle in Bohra practice is dawam al-dhikr — continuous remembrance — turning the transition between prayer and daily life into an act of ibadat in itself.
