The Obligation — Who Must Pray Jumu’a?
Jumu’a is fard ‘ayn (individually obligatory) on every:
- Muslim adult (post-puberty) man
- Who is free (not enslaved — a classical condition)
- Who is sane and healthy
- Who is a resident (not a traveler at the distance threshold)
- Who is not under a valid exemption
Exempt from Jumu’a (may pray Dhuhr instead):
- Women (Jumu’a is not obligatory, though they may attend and it counts for them)
- Travelers (beyond the qasr threshold)
- The ill (whose travel to the mosque would cause harm)
- The extremely elderly or disabled
Note: While women are exempt, they are not prohibited. Many scholars encourage women to attend when circumstances allow.
The Two Khutbas — Friday Sermon
The Friday khutba (sermon) is a wajib component of Jumu’a — without the khutba, the prayer itself is invalid. There are two khutbas, separated by a brief sitting.
Conditions for a valid khutba:
- Delivered after Dhuhr time enters
- Delivered before the prayer
- The imam must be standing and facing the congregation
- The congregation must be able to hear it
- Must include hamd (praise of Allah), salawat on the Prophet, Quranic recitation, and admonition/sermon content
The Khutba is the teaching moment: historically the khutba was the primary means of Islamic education for the community — announcements, theological teaching, responses to community events, moral guidance. The second khutba typically closes with du’a for the community.
The Prayer — Structure
Two rak’at fard: Jumu’a prayer is two rak’at (not four like Dhuhr). After the two khutbas, the imam leads two rak’at, with loud recitation of Surah al-Fatiha and an additional surah in both rak’at.
Minimum congregation: The scholars differ on the minimum number for Jumu’a to be valid: 2 (Hanbali minimum) / 3 / 12 / 40 — the most common figure in classical fiqh is 40 adult male residents. In practice, most contemporary scholars accept any sufficient gathering.
The Sunnah Practices of Friday
The Prophet taught specific acts for the day of Jumu’a:
- Ghusl (full ritual bath) before the prayer — the Prophet: “Ghusl on Friday is wajib on every adult.” (Bukhari and Muslim) — scholars interpret ‘wajib’ here as strongly recommended (sunnah mu’akkada)
- Wearing best clothes and applying perfume
- Early arrival to the mosque — the closer to the adhan time you arrive, the more reward
- Recitation of Surah al-Kahf (18) on Friday — the Prophet: “Whoever reads Surah al-Kahf on Jumu’a, a light will shine for him from one Friday to the next.”
- Abundant salawat on the Prophet on Friday and Friday night
The Special Hour of Friday
“On Friday there is an hour that if a Muslim servant coincides with it while praying and asking Allah for something good, He will grant it to him.” (Bukhari and Muslim) — The scholars debate which hour this is; the most widely held view is the period between the imam sitting on the minbar and the end of Jumu’a prayer, or the last hour before Maghrib.
