The Prophetic Recitation
The narration in Sahih al-Bukhari (4960): The Prophet said to Ubayy: “Allah has commanded me to recite the Quran to you.” Ubayy wept and asked: “God mentioned me by name?” The Prophet confirmed it.
This narration establishes Ubayy’s singular status in the Quran’s transmission chain: the Prophet recited to him, not merely gave general approval of his recitation. This makes Ubayy a primary link — the Prophet himself verified his recitation.
The Mushaf of Ubayy
Before Uthman’s standardization project (c. 30 AH), several Companions maintained their own personal codices with minor variations in arrangement and occasionally supplementary material. Ubayy’s mushaf:
- Contained the Quran in a different arrangement of surahs from the Uthmanic order
- Reportedly had some additional material before al-Falaq and after al-Nas (scholarly debate exists about the nature of this material)
- Was used as a reference by the Uthmanic committee alongside the codices of Zayd ibn Thabit, Ibn Masud, and others
After the Uthmanic standardization, Ubayy (in the mainstream account) complied with the burning of variant codices. His qira’ah (reading tradition) continued to be transmitted.
”Sayyid al-Qurra’”
Ubayy was called sayyid al-qurra’ — master of the Quran reciters. He trained many of the subsequent generation in Quranic recitation. His chains of transmission feed into the canonical seven reading traditions (qira’at sab’) of the Quran.
