Jibril (جِبرِيل — Gabriel; *Jibril* in Arabic; referred to in the Quran as *al-Ruh al-Amin* — the Trustworthy Spirit, *al-Ruh al-Quds* — the Holy Spirit, and *ruh min amrih* — a spirit from His command; the highest of the angels in Islamic theology; intermediary of divine revelation to all prophets) is the celestial being through whom Allah's revelations were transmitted to the Prophet Muhammad over 23 years. The Quran describes Jibril with significant reverence: he stood at the 'highest part of the horizon' (53:7), descended to the Prophet in various forms, and his appearance in full angelic form was so overwhelming that the Prophet saw him only twice — both times on the horizon, the second being at *Sidrat al-Muntaha* (the Lote Tree of the Furthest Limit) during the Isra' and Mi'raj.

His Quranic Names

Al-Ruh al-Amin (the Trustworthy Spirit — 26:193): “And indeed, the Quran is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds — the Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down upon your heart, [O Muhammad], that you may be of the warners.” The Quran came through Jibril to the Prophet’s heart (qalbik) — not to his ears or intellect first, but to the deepest organ of spiritual reception.

Al-Ruh al-Quds (the Holy Spirit — 16:102): “Say, the Holy Spirit has brought it [the Quran] down from your Lord in truth to make firm those who believe.”

Shadid al-Quwa (Mighty in Power — 53:5): “He was taught by one [who is] mighty in power — one of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form while he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.”

The Two Sightings (53:6-18)

“Then he approached and descended and was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed.”

This was the first sighting: Jibril in his full angelic form, on the horizon, descending. The Prophet later described seeing 600 wings filling the horizon. The Quran affirms: “His sight did not deviate, nor did it transgress [its limit]. He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.” (53:17-18)

The Hadith of Jibril

The most famous encounter: a man dressed in white with black hair came to the Prophet’s gathering, sat before him, and asked about Islam, Iman, and Ihsan. After he left, the Prophet told the Companions: “That was Jibril; he came to teach you your religion.” — Jibril teaching the core of the religion in human form, the ultimate curriculum delivery.
