The Final Illness (Safar–Rabi’ al-Awwal, 11 AH)
After returning from the Farewell Pilgrimage and delivering the final sermon, the Prophet began experiencing a severe headache and fever. He visited the graves of Baqi’ cemetery, prayed for the dead, and reportedly said he felt the approach of what he had been promised.
During the illness he continued to lead prayers for as long as he could. When he became too weak, he appointed Abu Bakr to lead. In the famous exchange, he emerged for a final prayer while being supported by Ali and al-Fadl ibn Abbas — the community saw him and their relief was visible; he gestured for Abu Bakr to continue leading.
The Prophet gave away his remaining possessions. He expressed concern about the Jewish and Christian practice of venerating the graves of their prophets — “Do not make my grave a place of prostration” — a statement that shaped later Sunni practice. He is reported to have said: “If I owe any man something, here I am; if I struck any man’s back, here is my back — let him strike.”
The Death Scene
The Prophet died in Aisha’s room, on his sickbed that had been moved there with his wives’ consent. The final moments:
- He called for a container of water (miswak and water) and cleaned his teeth
- His final words, reported by Aisha, were “Al-Rafiq al-A’la” (the Highest Companion) — the choice that the verse presents to those facing death: “the one among the prophets and the truthful and the martyrs and the righteous” (4:69)
- His hand went limp; Aisha reported: “The Prophet died while his head was between my chest and chin”
Abu Bakr’s Declaration
Umar ibn al-Khattab, overwhelmed, announced that the Prophet had not died and would return. Abu Bakr entered, went directly to the Prophet, uncovered his face, kissed his forehead, and came out to address the community:
“Amma ba’d: Whoever among you worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad has died. Whoever among you worshipped Allah, Allah is Ever-Living and never dies.” Then he recited 3:144:
“And Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]?”
Umar said: “When I heard Abu Bakr recite this verse, my legs gave way beneath me.”
