Yawm al-Qiyamah (يَومُ القِيَامَة — the Day of Standing/Rising; from *qama* — to stand; also called *yawm al-din* [the Day of Judgment], *yawm al-ba'th* [the Day of Resurrection], *yawm al-hashr* [the Day of Gathering], *yawm al-fasl* [the Day of Separation/Decision]) is the sixth pillar of Iman — belief in the Last Day — and the culminating eschatological event toward which all of history is moving. The Quran's most frequent recurring theme (eschatology appears in some form in virtually every surah) is the reality, imminence, and transformative implications of the Last Day. Key Quranic descriptions: *'When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness] / And when the stars fall away / And when the mountains are set in motion.'* (81:1-3) — *'On that Day, the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and all creatures will come out before Allah, the One, the Prevailing.'* (14:48) The Day encompasses a sequence of events: the blowing of the Trumpet (*Sur*), resurrection of all souls (*ba'th*), the Gathering (*hashr*), presentation of the Record (*hisab*), weighing on the Scale (*Mizan*), crossing the Bridge (*Sirat*), and entry into the Garden or the Fire. This article covers each stage, the major prophetic descriptions, and the Ismaili esoteric reading.

The Sequence of Events

Stage 1 — The Trumpet (Sur/Nafkha)

“And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.” (39:68)

Two blasts: the first causes universal death; the second raises all souls for judgment. The duration between the two blasts: the Prophet said 40 (not specifying days, months, or years).

Stage 2 — Resurrection (Ba’th)

All who have died from the beginning of humanity to its end are resurrected physically. The prophetic descriptions: resurrected barefoot, uncircumcised, and naked — Aisha asked about modesty, and the Prophet replied: “The matter will be too serious for anyone to look at another.” (Bukhari)

Stage 3 — The Gathering (Hashr)

The resurrected are gathered on a transformed earth (ard al-mahshar). The sun is brought close — depending on each person’s record, it is at varying distances, causing perspiration up to the ears. The prophets stand on platforms; the angels in ranks surrounding.

Stage 4 — The Account (Hisab)

Each soul stands before Allah individually. “So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” (99:7-8)

The account is conducted in private — a divine mercy: “Allah will conceal the believer [on that day] and cover him, saying: ‘Did you commit such-and-such a sin?’ He will reply: ‘Yes, my Lord.’ … Then Allah will say: ‘I have concealed them for you in the world, and I forgive them for you today.’” (Bukhari)

Stage 5 — The Scales (Mizan)

Deeds are literally weighed. The prophetic image: on the Day of Judgment, “two words, light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale, beloved to the Merciful: Subhanallah wa bihamdihi, Subhanallah al-‘Azim” (Bukhari) — glorification outweighs apparent size.

Stage 6 — The Sirat (Bridge)

All cross the bridge (sirat) over the Fire. The prophetic description: thinner than a hair, sharper than a sword. People cross it according to their deeds — some pass like lightning, some like the wind, some crawl, some fall. “The prophets will be saying: O Allah, grant safety, grant safety.”

Stage 7 — Entry into Garden or Fire

Those whose scales are heavy with good enter the Garden; those whose scales are heavy with evil enter the Fire. The Garden (jannah) and the Fire (nar) are the eternal destinations — the ultimate purpose of the entire creation narrative.

The Ismaili Ta’wil — The Inner Qiyamah

In Ismaili ta’wil, Yawm al-Qiyamah has both a cosmic (zahir) and an inner (batin) dimension. The inner Qiyamah is the kashf al-batin — the moment when the esoteric meanings of religion are unveiled to the soul during this life, through the Imam’s teaching. The qiyamat of the spirit occurs when the believer reaches the nafs mutma’inna (the soul at peace) and stands before the Imam in spiritual realization. This does not deny the cosmic Qiyamah — it adds a layer of meaning in which every moment of genuine spiritual awakening is a foretaste of the resurrection.
